The Monastery of Piedra. Aragon. Spain

Piedra is the name of the river that, in the southwest of the province of Zaragoza, forms a natural landscape, whose beauty attracts thousands of daily visitors.

The Monastery, founded in 1194 by thirteen Poblet monks, in the old castle of Piedra Vieja, was dedicated to Santa Maria de la Blanca and, as a whole, has been declared a National Monument.

The construction of the monastery passed through three stages: the primitive gothic (XIII th century); Gothic Renaissance (XVIth century) and classical-Baroque (XVIII century).

The walled enclosure was accessed by the Medieval Tower of Homage and the church, destroyed in the first decades of 1800, communicated with the open cloister of large pointed arches, and the different dependencies.
The beautiful chapter house (early twelfth century) was the nerve center of monastic life and the cells were housed in the building (17th century), now converted into a comfortable hotel.
The Romanesque columns of the old Abbey Palace support the new palace, of neoclassical style, built in the eighteenth century.
