Tourist information

The origin of San Juan de la Pea is related to an ancient rock hermit, which became the monastery of Saints Juin and Basilisa when the Atars Valley was conquered in the 10th century. From this period the Iglesia Baja , of Mozarabic style and consecrated towards 920.

Around 1025, Sancho el Mayor de Navarra, on the occasion of the introduction of the Benedictine monks in Aragon, founded a new center on the primitive nucleus.

This monastery played an important role in the introduction of the Roman rite and in the monastic reform that the king Sancho Ramirez started at 1.071 ; a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint John linked to Cluny was established here.

In this time the Lower Church is extended, to build on it a new , consecrated in 1094, of Romanesque jaques style, covered in part by the low rock mass the one that sits, and the pantheon of nobles was made.

Of exceptional interest is the cloister , exemplary for its important sculptural set of the mid-twelfth century, with historiated capitals, whose style will multiply in other parts of Aragon from of this moment.

The fifteenth century is one of the best examples of Aragonese Gothic architecture, when the chapter house was converted into the chapel of San Victorin.

In the seventeenth century, after suffering a fire, a new monastery was built in the Baroque style, but the lower monastery was never completely abandoned, and the pantheon was built on it real, neoclassical work of the eighteenth century.

Monastery and Low Church

The Lower Church is of Mozarabic style, with two apses with entrances under horseshoe arches.
It also has two naves separated by two other horseshoe arches.
It was in 1071 that the monastery of San Juan de la Pea began to be named, coinciding with the patrimonial donation made by the king Sancho Ramrez and the introduction of the Cluny Order. The restructuring of the space resulted in the construction of two superimposed floors.
In the first, barrel vaults and two windows were added to the naves, and a dormitory was built with four naves covered by barrel vaults and separated by semicircular arches. Three windows were opened in the wall of the faade.
Next to the wall of the Gospel is the Abbot Palace, with five half-point arched windows, and an open-air atrium used as the Pantheon of Nobles from the end of the 11th century.

High Church and cloister

The so-called High Church of San Juan de la Pea consists of a nave covered partly by the rock and partly by a barrel vault, and occupies the place where the Lower Church was. Concretely, a rectangular part with three apses excavated in the rock, with three arcs of half point on columns, and the wall adorned with blind arcade, columns and capitals.

The cloister, discovered to be under the rock, is structured by a rectangular podium on which the arches decorated with checkered, capitals and columns are placed. The most striking are the historiated capitals, the work of an unknown but prominent sculptor, who has been called Master of San Juan de la Pea, to whom Two wings of the cloister correspond. The work is completed with fantastic scenes carved by a second author at the beginning of the 13th century.

The New Monastery

390/5000 The beginning of the work dates from 1693, and the church was consecrated in 1705. The enclosure, built in brick, is protected by a wall reinforced by cylindrical cubes.
It has a square to which the church gives, the old porter turned into a hostel and the abbot's house. The highlight is the faade with the three baroque portals carved in stone and very decorated.
