Este año (2003) ha sido afortunado para la recuperación de la historia de Calatayud.
Las excavaciones en la antigua Bilbilis romana siguen su lento caminar, pero hay una población mas antigua que se va mostrando poco a poco.
En un solar del casco antiguo, en la calle de Herrer y Marco, cerca de la actual Puerta de Terrer punto de acceso a la muralla que rodeaba a Calatayud, han aparecido restos de la muralla celtibérica del siglo III antes de Cristo.
La muralla aparecida se compone de sillares de metro y medio de largo por setenta centímetros de anchura y treinta de grosor, junto a un foso y que se han identificado como parte de una muralla que rodeaba el asentamiento urbano. Es posible que esta muralla fuera recrecia simultaneamente a la de Segeda. También es probable que el foso se rellenara tras las destrucciones llevadas a cabo por los romanos en el año 153 antes de Cristo en la Segunda Guerra Celtibérica.
Estos hallazgos se vienen a añadir a los indicios aparecidos en los años 90, hasta estos años se dio por sentado que Calatayud fue fundada por los Musulmanes en el siglo VIII, pero los últimos descubrimientos, restos de villas romanas, confirmaron la existencia de poblaciones anteriores en este mismo enclave.
Existió pues una ciudad que compartia la capitalidad territorial con Segeda (situada entre los municipios de Mara y Belmonte).
