Archbishop Joaquin Company also called Portrait of the Archbishop of Zaragoza, full-length (212 x 130 cm.), painted in 1800.
Technique, oil.
It is located in the Archbishop's Palace of Zaragoza, in the Throne Room, and belongs to the Archbishop's Heritage.
The work is known in two versions:
one, formerly in San Martin de Valencia, lost or destroyed during the Civil War (1936-39);
the other, in the Archbishop's Palace of Zaragoza. In both, below, on the left, the legend: "His Excellency Mr. Fray Joaquin Company, a native of Penaguila, Reyno de Valencia.
Minister General of the Order of San Francisco the elected archbishop of Zaragoza on June 30, 1797 and transferred to the archbishopric of Valencia on August 11, 1800".
The scholar of Goya, Sánchez Cantón, in 1951 judged the canvas of Zaragoza to be earlier, especially since in the Valencia version, the archbishop appeared with the order of Carlos III; Gudiol also sees the origial of the canvas in Zaragoza and creates a replica of the other.
The painting can only be visited with special permission of the Director of the Archiepiscopal Heritage.
