Quinzano

Quinzano es uno de los lugares más apacibles y tranquilos de todo el Prepirineo aragonés
It is located at the foot of the famous medieval castle of Loarre (eleventh century), in the plains that are born next to the slopes of three mountain ranges: the Loarre, the Sierra Caballera and the Gratal, whose highest levels are in the peaks Puchilibro (1597 m.), Caballero (1561 m.) And Gratal (1542 m.).

Quinzano received many centuries ago, this name, in a period in which, after the death of the Iberian caudillo Quinto Sertorio (c.121-72 a.C.), the flourishing city of Osca was converted, in knot of road communications, and extended throughout the Hoya villas and Roman mansions.
It is possible that the origin of the name is due to the distance of this settlement: about fifteen Roman miles from the center of the present town of Huesca.
For the historians G. Fatas and F. Marco it is an anthroponym derived from the proper name (Fifth, perhaps) of the Roman lord who owns the town and the lands.
Another historian, Duran Gudiol, points out a possible Gothic origin around the monastery of San Pedro Séptimo.
It is located in La Sotonera, next to the Val de Ayerbe, some territories that in the Middle Ages came to belong to a kingdom: the Kingdom of Los Mallos.

To get today to this small but beautiful place belonging to the municipality of La Sotonera , you have to travel about 22 kilometers from Huesca on the A-132 road to Pamplona, and deviate to the right nothing more to pass the localities of Esquedas and Plasencia del Monte, known for offering to the traveler at the foot of the road typical Aragonese gastronomic riches in the restaurants of Venta del Soton, El Cobertizo or La Posada.

The Municipality of La Sotonera, named for the river Sotón that crosses it, has its head in the Villa de Bolea, located about eleven kilometers from Quinzano by road.
Other places that share the town hall are Anies, Puibolea, Lierta and the aforementioned Esquedas and Plasencia del Monte.

In spite of its present size, with little more than ninety inhabitants, Quinzano was a very rough place, with a long history linked to that of Castillo de Loarre, to that of Bolea, to the Kingdom of Los Mallos ... and with a great livestock and agricultural wealth, thanks to its unbeatable location in the middle of the Somontano, next to the Riel River, tributary of the Soton, in the foothills of the Sierras Exteriores of the Aragonese Pyrenees, like a ship in the middle of the vast seas of cereal that in spring the wind rocks in green waves ...

Witness to its flourishing past is the parish church of San Martin, which preserves a Romanesque tower above the rest of the building rebuilt in the eighteenth century, respecting several other romantic remains. Inside its three-section nave finished in polygonal bside, you can admire rich altarpieces and pieces of goldsmiths from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In the shadow of the church, with large stone arcades typical of the Aragonese architecture, there is a small square, Plaza Barriete. In the center there is a small fountain. On the pillow rests a stone statue in the shape of a esparbel or aliga, which is what they call the hawk or eagle on this earth. And it is that the wide and blue skies of this somontano are permanently furrowed by the silent flight of the birds. Vultures, eagles and hawks nest in the peñas of the neighboring mountain ranges. They plan from there riding the athletic wind in search of car & ntilde and dams.

On the other side of the church there is a second plaza. It is surrounded by large mansions, some of which are still their facades of sand stone and doors adinteladas in arc of half point proud. It is the Plaza Baja, and the two rural tourism houses of Quinzano offer hospitality. Walking through some of the streets that are going to give the square, slightly uphill, you can find some facades decorated with their family shields carved in stone. Originally from Quinzano were some illustrious guests, such as Marti de Bailo who lived there. at the beginning of the XVII century, and was present in the Cortes of 1626.

Although today they still only cultivate three or four vineyards in the lands of Quinzano, in the past the town produced many and very good somontano wines, which in Bolea and other towns of La Sotonera still lingers. Some of the oldest houses in Quinzano preserve as a treasure, traditional wineries and ancient stone wells, like in Casa Cosme.

Quinzano is a paradise for hiking and mountain biking. At the end of the village in the direction of the cemetery, away from any asphalt road, between fields of grains and increasingly steep hills, can be accessed by forgotten roads to the Castle of Loarre, to Ani and the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Pelatilo Bolea and its collegiate church of Santa Maria, or start the ascent through more rugged areas to the first foothills of the Pyrenean Outer Sierras.
