It is accessed from the capital via the N-II highway with a detour to the NE. from La Almunia de Doña Godina to the C-220 road, next to the banks of the Jalón river.
It is one of the most populous towns located next to the Jalón River. It is located about 5 kilometers from La Almunia de Doña Godina. This last town gives its name to what geographers call Campo de La Almunia, which more or less coincides with the plain of Bajo Jalón until its peaceful confluence with the Ebro. The grown urban center of Calatorao sits on a soft natural plateau , whose low height is sufficient to dominate a plain with a green appearance and very well cultivated for various host crops, particularly fruit trees; A large part of these are marketed in modern facilities. The black stone quarries are also well known.
Tradition, collected by various authors, although none dared to state it outright, used to place the Portuguese and Roman Nertóbriga in Calatorao, mentioned during the campaigns of the Romans Marcellus and Metellus in the mid-2nd century (before Jesus Christ). . Lately, the archaeologist Beltrán Martínez has spoken out in favor of the Cabezo de Chinchón, near La Almunia, although it is undeniable that there was also Roman settlement in Calatorao judging by the archaeological remains discovered.
It was Arab domination that gave rise to its current name, a clear derivation of a Qalat (castle), upon whose completion many historians have been tempted to proclaim it "golden" or "golden." Indeed, the bricks of the current castle are gilded, although it was built four centuries after the Christian reconquest. But in reality Calatorao comes from Qalat-al-Turab (earth castle), from which Calaturab first derived, and then Calatorao.
On the first Sunday in May, a pilgrimage takes place to the Calvario hermitage.
The main festivals correspond to August 24 in honor of the local Patron Saint, Saint Bartholomew. Highlights include the bull runs, heifer festivals, sports competitions, dances, rallies, parades, along with other shows.
On September 14, the festival takes place in honor of the Holy Christ. In addition to the relevant religious events, the festive program takes place over several days.
