History

The historical starting point is not easy to date. The first antecedents correspond to the 6th and 7th centuries AD in Varella Castellar, where a Visigothic acropolis was located.
The first documented data appear after the Reconquista. King James I the Conqueror donated the town of Codo to the Monastery of Rueda in July 1224. Once the town was populated, the fields and waters of Codo were divided among their Christian neighbors.
As in every town in Aragon, ours was populated by Moors, Jews and Christians. Although the most politically important were the Christians, it was the Moors (converted or not) who mostly lived in the houses. We must not forget that it was intended to build a mosque in the orchard, and the church tower is fully Mudejar.

"You poor bastards, you burned a mountain man in the middle of the square." Well, this saying comes because the Moors did not pay tithes to the Monastery of Rueda around 1580.
Thus, the abbot of the monastery sent some ministers in order to recover the tithe ducats. Those from Codo killed said ministers and the abbot went to the Viceroy of Aragon to investigate such crimes. But the ordered judge could not clarify anything, since all the Codinos were converts and therefore enemies of the Old Christians. So they continued with their evils and admitted outlaws and bad-living people into their homes, with whom they formed gangs, committing many crimes in the surrounding areas and in their own area. Among one of them, killing a mountain shepherd and several Catalan oil workers. These deaths caused the friends of the mountaineer and the Catalans to form a group of more than 300 men to slaughter all the residents of Codo and burn the town. They attacked the town, but the codinos defended themselves, and the next day, when the mountaineers returned to continue the fight, they found the town deserted. The mountaineers looted it and then set it on fire. The codinos were scattered through caves, mountains and nearby towns, and the town was abandoned for more than 1 and a half years.

The first documented confrontation between the Codinos and Belchitans takes place in 1587 (I believe it would be even earlier).

In May 1610 the non-converted Moriscos who lived in Codo abandoned the town, by order of King Philip III, and this forced the Monastery to repopulate Codo.

With the confiscation of Mendizabal in 1837, the lands and properties of the Monastery were sold to the inhabitants of Codo
Among the people of the region they are known as esparteros.

Monuments and places of interest

The entire town stands out with its impressive Parish Church of San Bernardo (XVIII). Built in mud and brick on a primitive Mudejar style temple, 17th century, the interior is baroque. The tower, however, belongs to the original style. Burned during the Civil War.

Next to the town there is a 14th century castle, its remains remain that adopt a square plan and had towers in the corners.

At the entrance to the town there is a large pond with water.

We also find the Planerón Ornithological Reserve, one of the most important in Europe.

It is the birthplace of the writer Benjamín Jarnes, from the generation of '27.

Dance de Codo

Festivals:

The Patron Saint Festivities are celebrated on August 20 in honor of Saint Bernard, it is typical to dance and recite verses. The town has an old dance dedicated to San Bernardo Abad, patron saint of the town, and a performance on the day of the patron saint of Moors and Christians.

The dance is made up of the parade "Cuatro Galanes" and the following movements: "La Malva", "El Cerecero", "los Pajarillos", "el Santo" and "los Tordos".

Associations: "Amas de Casa Benjamin Jarnes", "Interpeñas Codo" and "Asoc. Cultural Dance de San Bernardo"

Other Festivals: San Isidro and Santa Agueda (where women gather after mass in the portico to form a circle and recite verses with a highly comic content).
