His love was reflected in his work: Little Known Towns of Spain by Vernon Howe Bailey, published in 1926 and 1927.
He made his first trip to Spain with his second wife, Edith O'Brien Carr Bailey, from March to October 1921, traveling through numerous cities and remote villages, often in a mule-drawn cart, capturing the sights in watercolors and drawings. Among his most notable works are his meticulous views of the interiors of the Liria Palace, his twelve studies of Coca Castle in Segovia, and others of Cuenca, Pasajes, Seville, Ávila, and Córdoba. One hundred and fifty of these works were acquired by the Hispanic Society of America in New York and exhibited in its Broadway museum on January 9, 1922.
Captivated by Spain as a result of his first trip, he returned again in 1925, this time visiting forty towns. The fruit of his stay was the beautiful book "Little Known Towns of Spain," published in New York in 1926, in which he revealed not only the typical tourist spots but also other places unknown to the general public. This was what the painter Ignacio Zuloaga half-jokingly criticized him for when they met in Paris: his bringing to light forgotten places that would soon lose their charm with the massive influx of curious visitors.
List of locations in the work:
Tordesillas. Cardona. Solsona. Manresa. Balaguer. Monzón. Barbastro. Morella. Alcañiz. Tarazona. Almazán. Medinaceli. Calatayud. Teruel. Albarracín. Alarcón. Requena. Jérica. Sagunto. Villajoyosa. Játiva. Almansa. Alcoy. Lorca. Loja. Alhama. Cáceres. Trujillo. Sepúlveda. Baza.
