The Provincial Historical Archive of Huesca is a file of state ownership, whose management is entrusted to the Autonomous Community of Aragon by agreement signed with the Ministry of Culture on June 2, 1986.
It was created in 1931 with the purpose of gathering the notarial protocols of the province of Huesca more than one hundred years old. This initial objective was later extended to other documentation of historical character. On the other hand, the Archive also serves as an intermediate repository for the documentation produced by the different bodies of the peripheral State Administrations (Decree 914/1969, of May 8, of the Ministry of Education and Science) and of the Autonomous Community (Decree 12/1993, of 9 February, of the Diputación General de Aragón).
It currently has its headquarters in the former Dominican School of Santa Rosa, a building rehabilitated for its current destination and inaugurated on November 30, 1984.
The documentary collections occupy 4.5 kilometers of shelving and cover a very long chronological period, from the end of the 12th century until 1990.

The documents that are part of the Spanish Documentary Heritage are of free consultation, with general character, according to the Law 16/1985, of June 25, of the Spanish Historical Heritage. However, the aforementioned Law, as well as Law 30/1992, of November 26, on the Legal Regime of Public Administrations and the Common Administrative Procedure, determine certain limitations on access; the most noteworthy refer to documents that affect the security and defense of the State, the investigation of crimes and the privacy of individuals; The state of conservation of the documents can also be a cause of restrictions on access.
The consultation of the accessible documents is free.
To consult documents for research purposes it is necessary to be in possession of the National Researcher Card or the Researcher Card of the Autonomous Community. Two passport-size photographs and a cover letter from a university professor, academic or person of recognized prestige in the field of research must be submitted for issuance.

Pueden obtenerse fotocopias de los documentos del Archivo, salvo en los casos en que su estado de conservación lo desaconseje.
El Archivo cuenta con dos lectores de microfilmes que además pueden reproducir en soporte papel los documentos microfilmados.
Se encarga del control de las condiciones de conservación en los depósitos documentales y de la restauración de los documentos del Archivo, tanto en soporte papel como en pergamino, que se encuentren afectados por causas de alteración químicas, físicas o biológicas.
Es un pequeña sala destinada a exposiciones temporales.
Está constituída por un pequeño fondo bibliográfico que se aproxima a los 3.000 volúmenes y especializada en archivística, ciencias auxiliares e instrumentos de descripción de otros archivos; comprende también algunas obras de referencia de carácter general y otras sobre historia de Aragón e historia local.
