This year (2003) has been fortunate for the recovery of the history of Calatayud.
The excavations in the ancient Roman Bilbilis continue their slow progress, but there is an older population that is showing itself little by little.
On a site in the old town, on Herrer y Marco street, near the current Puerta de Terrer access point to the wall that surrounded Calatayud, remains of the Celtiberian wall from the 3rd century BC have appeared.
The wall that appeared is made up of ashlars measuring one and a half meters long by seventy centimeters wide and thirty centimeters thick, along with a moat and which have been identified as part of a wall that surrounded the urban settlement. It is possible that this wall was regrown simultaneously with that of Segeda. It is also likely that the moat was filled in after the destruction carried out by the Romans in 153 BC in the Second Celtiberian War.
These findings add to the evidence that appeared in the 90s, until these years it was taken for granted that Calatayud was founded by Muslims in the 8th century, but the latest discoveries, remains of Roman villas, confirmed the existence from previous populations in this same enclave.
There was therefore a city that shared the territorial capital with Segeda (located between the municipalities of Mara and Belmonte).
