At the beginning of the 12th century Cistercian monks arrive at a place that we know today as Monasterio de Piedra , near Calatayud.
They go in search of peace and tranquility for their spiritual recollection.
The Monastery, on the banks of the Piedra River, would be known and admired by many since it was abandoned by its inhabitants.
The river, of fresh and transparent waters, disappears suddenly into the bowels of the earth forming a labyrinthine system of galleries, siphons and underground caves to emerge impetuously jumping in innumerable waterfalls.
The beauty of water and stone is increased by the lush vegetation: poplars, acacias, plane trees, mulberry trees, willows, elms and pines that are offered as a counterpoint to the desolate aridity of the degraded surrounding mountains.
Not too far from the Monastery is the largest natural lagoon in Spain: the Gallocanta lagoon, located at around 1,000 m. of altitude, and with 1,400 hectares of flooded area.
Many aquatic birds gather there, so it attracts specialist ornithologists from all over Europe who consider the place an authentic nature reserve in which every year the largest concentration of cranes, practically the entire species, gathers.
The Queiles and Huecha rivers are born from the snowy summits and extend towards the North until merging with the irrigation of the Ebro.
We are in the Moncayo natural park, with about 1,100 km2.
The Moncayo of 2.315 m. of height dominates the whole region. On its slopes, lush forests invite to the walk.
Among the beautiful villages of the area, Vera de Moncayo stands out with the well-known Veruela Monastery that hosted the romantic Becquer.
