Around the castle square was the oldest known human settlement, the Iberian city of Alaun. It was the easternmost of the Basque cities and coin currency with inscriptions in the Iberian alphabet. Its inhabitants already knew the irrigated agriculture, as can be seen from the bronze of Contrebia, which dated May 15 of the year 87 before Christ, recounts a lawsuit between the inhabitants of Alaun and Salduie (Zaragoza) motivated by the layout of a ditch for land purchased from sosinestranos. At present, that old ditch is still in operation, today called the Almozara, being probably one of the oldest in Spain.
With the name of Allabone, during the Roman period it was one of the mansions of the road that by Turiaso ( Tarazona ) was going to Asturica (Astorga) from Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza).
In the year 714, Islam reaches the Ebro Valley, Alagón being an important population of the Superior Brand of Al-Andalus, of which Zaragoza was its capital. The Caliph Abderraman III slept on his castle on October 14, 935. From this period, which ends in 1118 with the Christian conquest of Alfonso I, part of its walls, the minaret of its mosque (now the bell tower of San Pedro), and abundant toponymy such as the Plaza de la Alhóndiga, where the city was located inn or "funduq" and the neighborhood of La Jarea (As-Sari'a), a place outside the walls where the whole town met on certain holidays.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Alagon, where Aragonese Courts were held, was the Christian center of a region with a majority of Mudejar population dedicated to agriculture. Next to the Christians there was a powerful Jewish aljama in Alagon, located around the Virto replaceta.
From the 16th century, the hamlet extends towards the NE around Calle Mayor and Plaza Nueva (today in Spain), encompassing pre-existing neighborhoods such as San Juan.
In the 18th century, the Jesuits built a school, dedicated to San Antonio, on the site of the former Jewish quarter. At the end of the century, the Imperial Canal of Aragon saves in Alagón the biggest obstacle it had to reach Zaragoza, building a magnificent aqueduct on the Jalón river, popularly known as El Caracol.
Finally, the twentieth century represents for Alagón the birth of industrial activities that are added to the traditional agricultural and commercial, installing in 1905 La Azucarera and finally, in 1980, Opel Spain in the neighboring town of Figueruelas.
