The hidden face of Moncayo Calcena

Aragon > Zaragoza> Calcena

Parish Church of Our Lady of the Virgin of the Kings: It is located in the highest part of the town.
The current building is the result of the combination of styles and eras. Of the primitive Romanesque temple, only the north and south walls remain, not complete, as well as the door on the epistle side, with a semicircular arch of four archivolts that rest on columns with capitals decorated with leaves. This work is late (11th-12th centuries), but it is one of the few examples of Romanesque art south of the Ebro River.

Calcena Zaragoza Entorno Natural del Moncayo

In the 16th century the temple began a profound transformation promoted by D. Hernando de Aragón and which continued until the 18th century, achieving its current appearance. It is a Renaissance building, a "hall" church, with three naves of equal height, with star vaults, supported by cylindrical columns. The main Altar, work of Diego Martínez, deserves to be highlighted; altarpieces of Saint Babil and the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, works by Jerónimo de Cósida; The chorus; The Mudejar style tower has a passage at the base.

Castle: only two sides of a keep and a wall remain. It is probably a castle on the border line with Castile built in the 13th-15th centuries.
Built quickly and by the same neighbors, their workmanship was rough, after the union with Castile they were abandoned.

San Miguel: Romanesque, the apse remains, two semicircular windows, the beginning of the arches of the nave and a Gothic arch on the south face.

Hermitages:
Hermitage of the Virgen de las Nieves or the "Cortijo": it preserves the painting dedicated to it and its construction is attributed to Pope Julius II due to the papal signs on the fence. San Cristobal: with Christ and altarpiece under restoration. It has magnificent views over the town, the Sierra del Moncayo and the Virgen.
Hermitages of San José, La Virgen and San Roque very deteriorated.

Other monuments: The town center preserves the Moorish flavor with narrow and steep streets. It is surrounded by wineries.
About three km in the direction of Trasobares is the Batán stone bridge. Of uncertain date, it allows the Isuela River to be saved in a place of great beauty.

The mines of Valdeplata and the Foundry: once flourishing, their ruins are surrounded by silence with chasms, galleries, furnaces, ... waiting for a new day.
