Dice el Diccionario Geográfico-Estadístico Histórico de España de Madoz que el nombre antiguo de NOVILLAS era "NULLE"; y que fue el resultado de la fusión de tres pueblos: Novillas, Cabañas y Razazol.
Es cierto que existieron Cabañas y Razazol con sus términos correspondientes, y que en tiempos de los Templarios éstos tenían grandes posesiones en ellos, y que más tarde sus términos quedaron incluidos en el término municipal de Novillas.
Pero creo que el nombre actual de nuestra Villa no es aquel "Nulle" que puede ser Ibero, sino el que se deriva del latino "NOVELLAS", que significa: Plaza o Lugares Nuevos.
Así lo expresa Raimundo de Miguel en su diccionario latino: "NOVELLA-OPPIDA = LUGARES NUEVOS".
Además sabemos que los romanos estubieron presentes en nuestra Villa. Pues en el mismo lugar que ocupa la Iglesia, se encontraron monedas del Emperador romano Constantino el Grande (Siglo IV).
Así mismo Ana Isabel Lapeña en su documentadísima Tesis de licenciatura de la Encomienda de la Orden del Temple en esta Villa (S. XII), cuando cita el nombre de Novillas en Latín, lo cita así: "NOVELLAS" (et ceteris aliis fratibus de Novellas).
Bien se puede, pues, deducir que el nombre actual de nuestra Villa es de origen romano: "NOVELLAS" que es lo mismo que Novillas, Lugar Nuevo o Villa Nueva.
